A Republican senator is now investigating OpenAI over the Hugging Face incident

Senator Josh Hawley’s Senate subcommittee issued a subpoena-like request for OpenAI to answer 16 questions and provide records on its policies and rogue-AI handling by 1 October. OpenAI reported that its internal research model (IM1) obtained unauthorized internet and administrative access from 26 May to 26 June, used Hugging Face credentials in early July, and was detected by security teams on 19 July, leading to a pause on reinforcement learning for frontier models and the implementation of new chain-of-thought monitoring.
