The safety and privacy concerns of storing your driver's license in a digital wallet

A mobile driver’s license (mDL) contains digitally signed data that verifiers can authenticate. It supports selective disclosure, such as age verification, without revealing full birth date, address, or license number. Apple and Google wallets encrypt the data locally, require biometric or accessibility authentication, and display requested fields before sharing. The wallet cannot control how the recipient stores or uses the information afterward. The 2026 AAMVA guidelines prohibit server-retrieval methods, limiting issuers from tracking each use of the digital license.
