Scientists develop new method for deciphering ancient scrolls

Researchers created contemporary charred papyrus models to validate a screening method for identifying Herculaneum scrolls written with lead-based ink. This technique prioritizes the most readable candidates among the 600 fragile, carbonized scrolls recovered from the library of the philosopher Philodemus, which were buried by the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
