Seattle Times and Newsday sue OpenAI and Microsoft for infringement

The Seattle Times and Newsday sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming the companies used their copyrighted journalism without permission to train AI models and frequently reproduce passages in responses. The plaintiffs allege that OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Microsoft’s Copilot, built on OpenAI technology, incorporate these unlicensed excerpts. This lawsuit joins nearly 400 local newspapers that have recently filed similar claims.
