Senator asks US government watchdog to review how feds use hacking tools

Senator Ron Wyden requested a GAO audit of the FBI, DEA, ICE-HSI and Secret Service’s hacking tools and spyware, citing absent public data on their scope, frequency and safeguards. He asked the GAO to assess potential abuse, storage methods, leak prevention, court disclosures, and agency reporting of discovered security flaws, referencing a former L3Harris executive’s sale of tools to Russian brokers and the FBI’s 1999 PGP-related malware operation.
