Sony and Warner sue Anthropic for 'blatant violation' of copyright law

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, claiming the firm illegally torrent-downloaded and scraped thousands of copyrighted musical works to train its Claude AI models. The complaint seeks up to $150,000 per infringed work and $25,000 for each removal of copyright management information, potentially amounting to billions in damages. This follows earlier suits by Concord Music Group, Universal Music Group and an authors’ coalition that resulted in a $1.5 billion settlement.
