Sony Music and Warner Chappell sue Anthropic over song lyrics in Claude’s training data

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sued Anthropic in California, naming executives Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann and demanding up to $150,000 per allegedly copied lyric. The complaint cites songs such as “Eye of the Tiger,” “Livin’ On a Prayer,” and works by Mariah Carey and Taylor Swift, alleging Anthropic obtained the lyrics from pirate sites like Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror. A Munich court previously ruled that memorizing lyrics in an AI model is unlawful reproduction not covered by the text-and-data-mining exception.
