Spain wants data centres on 80% renewables every hour, or no grid connection

Spain’s draft decree requires new data centres over one megawatt to source at least 80% of their electricity from renewables each hour, or lose grid access. Each megawatt must be matched by renewable capacity within 18 months, with unconnected projects given six months to comply or forfeit connection rights. The rule also mandates EU establishment, European-only data residency, and tighter water-use standards, focusing on American hyperscalers.
