A Stealth Startup Thinks It Just Hacked the Memory Shortage

Kepler Computing, a San Jose startup founded in 2018, unveiled a 3D-stacking memory architecture that boosts high-bandwidth memory density without using extreme ultraviolet lithography, allowing production in existing fabs. Backed by $468 million investors—including GlobalFoundries, Intel Capital, AMD Ventures, Baillie Gifford, and Bill Gates—the company is testing chips on GlobalFoundries’ 28 nm lines in Singapore and Vermont, while the U.S. Commerce Department has pledged up to $245 million for further development.
