Supreme Court forces TV stations to sell more election ads at steep discounts

The Supreme Court ordered broadcast TV stations to apply the “lowest unit charge” discount to election ads purchased by political parties and joint fundraising committees, not only to individual candidates. The decision follows a petition by the NRCC and NRSC and becomes effective at the start of the 60-day pre-election discount period required by law, extending the lowest-price obligation to entities that can raise and spend unlimited campaign funds.
