Taiwan pledges $20bn more in US chip investment while courting the EU, Reuters reports

Taiwan’s economy minister confirmed an extra $20 billion investment in U.S. semiconductor production, supplementing a prior agreement that reduced tariffs to 15% for at least $250 billion of Taiwanese spending on U.S. fabs. The deal also entails $44.4 billion in U.S. LNG and crude purchases, $15.2 billion in aircraft and engine acquisitions, and $25.2 billion in power-generation equipment. TSMC’s U.S. programme now totals $265 billion, covering ten fabs, two advanced-packaging sites and a research centre. Taiwan is concurrently courting the EU, stressing democratic values and offering technology access rather than manufacturing capacity.
