Tesla's Cybercab is under federal investigation almost immediately after hitting the streets

NHTSA is investigating about 1,000 Tesla Cybercabs that started commercial service in Austin, Texas, after Tesla self-certified them as meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The agency will audit the certification and technical data, scrutinizing Tesla’s claim that FMVSS do not apply because the Cybercabs lack permanent manual controls. Reuters notes Tesla has registered 420 autonomous vehicles in Texas, including 45 Cybercabs, and operates robotaxi rides with Model Y cars in other cities.
