Tesla’s Door Handles Lead to Its Biggest Recall Yet

Chinese regulators are recalling over 2.9 million Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built from 2019-2026 because retractable electronic door handles may impede emergency egress, especially when low-voltage batteries fail. Tesla will issue an OTA update that lowers windows after a crash and provide free warning stickers to locate the hidden mechanical handles. The recall occurs amid a Chinese sweep of more than 1 million cars from eight domestic manufacturers and upcoming rules that will ban fully retractable door handles.
