Texas has 474GW of data centre requests and no idea how many are real

Texas utilities have received 474 GW of data-centre connection requests, exceeding the state’s historic peak demand fivefold. Most requests are speculative, filed cheaply to gain queue priority, creating “ghost demand.” Higher application fees and stricter permitting have reduced high-probability demand by up to 40%, exposing the disparity between proposed and actual electricity needs.
