This road map could help us decide whether to deploy solar geoengineering
Reflective, a San Francisco nonprofit, released a “SAI Research Roadmap” outlining experiments, studies, and infrastructure needed to evaluate stratospheric aerosol injection, estimating a coordinated effort would cost $370 million and take a decade, versus $1.4 billion and 20 years if uncoordinated. The roadmap calls for staged outdoor releases of sulfur-dioxide-producing materials despite a long-standing academic call for a ban, and highlights unresolved governance questions about who would control such planet-altering technology.
