Thunder + fiber-optic cabling used for seismic imaging

Scientists at Penn State have developed a model that interprets complex seismic signals generated by thunderquakes, which are seismic waves produced when thunder energy penetrates the upper crust. Using this model, they reconstructed the subsurface structure beneath the Penn State campus, demonstrating that thunder-induced seismic data can supplement traditional earthquake and controlled-source imaging.
