Transplanted Pig Kidney Still Working After a Record-Setting 9 Months in a Patient

A genetically edited pig kidney has functioned for 285 days in a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital, surpassing the previous 271-day record. eGenesis used CRISPR to delete pig genes that trigger immune rejection and insert human genes, enabling the organ to operate without dialysis. The FDA has approved a formal trial of up to 33 kidney-failure patients, slated for 2027.
