Uber hit with a nearly $1 billion fine for automatically deactivating drivers in Europe

The Dutch Data Protection Authority fined Uber 824.9 million euros for automatically deactivating driver accounts between 2018 and 2022, a practice deemed a GDPR violation that stripped drivers of income without human review. The penalty, calculated at four percent of Uber’s global turnover, follows earlier fines of 600,000 euros (2018), 10 million euros (2023) and 290 million euros (2024); Uber has announced an appeal.
