The UN challenges five centuries of cartography

The United Nations adopted a resolution, supported by the African Union and 164 member states, to replace the 500-year-old Mercator projection with the Equal Earth projection, which preserves accurate continent sizes while reducing shape distortion. Equal Earth, created in 2018 after criticism of Gall-Peters, offers a more balanced, equal-area view without the extreme vertical stretching of earlier alternatives.
