UNICEF study finds 60% of online child sexual abuse happens on social media

UNICEF’s study of 21,000 internet-using children in 21 countries found that 60% of the 20 million reported sexual abuse incidents occurred on social-media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and WhatsApp, with 14% happening in online games. The research also revealed that 1.1 million children had AI-generated sexual imagery created of them, and 57% of perpetrators were known to the victims, while fewer than 1% of cases were reported to authorities.
