US lawmakers demand investigation into admin's secret surveillance of Americans
U.S. Democrats Ron Wyden and Pramila Jayapal asked the GAO to investigate DHS’s use of administrative summonses to obtain records on journalists, unions, and tech firms without judicial oversight. They cited DHS’s secret collection of six months of Georgia Fort’s phone records, summonses to Google for YouTube data, and subpoenas to Meta, X, and Reddit to unmask critics. The lawmakers also requested an audit of non-disclosure language in summonses and policy changes following a 2017 inspector-general report.
