US senator calls on the NSA to give guidance for use of VPNs

A U.S. senator has urged the NSA to issue public guidance on selecting and using virtual private networks (VPNs) to protect communications from foreign espionage. The request notes that while VPNs encrypt traffic and hide IP addresses, many implementations expose decrypted data at exit servers and fail to conceal metadata such as timestamps, creating vulnerabilities that can be exploited by rogue insiders or nation-state actors.
