VLC crosses 7 billion downloads

VLC media player, maintained by the non-profit VideoLAN, has surpassed 7 billion downloads across all platforms, announced by president and lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf. The milestone follows the 6 billion download count reached in January 2025, and the team recently ported VLC to Amazon’s Vega OS for TVs while preparing the VLC 4 release. VideoLAN previously hinted at AI-powered translation and subtitle features using local models, though their release status remains unclear.
