Welcome to the spiderverse, a world measured through webs

Researchers have shown that spiderwebs capture abundant environmental DNA, outperforming vegetation swabs, water, soil, and air filters at detecting vertebrate species near a Perth zoo, confirming earlier French findings. Synthetic webs placed outdoors also collected eDNA from livestock, exotic birds, and fungal spores, suggesting a scalable, low-cost method for biodiversity monitoring.
