What's the Scam?

The author’s newsletter subscription process requires entering an address on a web form and confirming via an automated reply email. Since last weekend, the author has received dozens of one-line, overly flattering responses from random Gmail addresses that never actually subscribed, all generated by AI. The messages appear to be a scam, but no further interaction or clear motive has been observed.
