Who Makes Your Supplements?
Since 1994 supplement makers have not been required to prove label claims to the FDA, which must test products itself and lacks a system to track the roughly 100,000 items now sold for $73 billion annually. Most brands are produced by a few contract manufacturers—such as Catalent, Vitaquest, Robinson Pharma and International Vitamin Corporation—that hide client identities, resulting in large-scale recalls like the 2020 ABH Nature’s Products pull and the 2021 Georgia recall of 77 products across 70 brands for undisclosed milk content.
