Why are vertebrate eyes so different from those of other animals?

Vertebrate eyes may have originated from a single light-sensitive organ. They differ from other animal groups, with ciliary photoreceptors in vertebrates and rhabdomeric photoreceptors in arthropods and cephalopods. This difference sets vertebrate eyes apart from others.
