Why do routers have so many antennas?

Routers use multiple antennas to enable MIMO technologies such as spatial multiplexing, beamforming, signal diversity, and MU-MIMO, which let them send separate data streams, focus signals toward devices, and serve several clients simultaneously. For typical homes, two to four antennas suffice, while eight-antenna units are mainly justified for extensive coverage or high-density business environments.
