Why HPSC Is a Big Deal for Space Exploration
NASA’s High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) project, developed with Microchip Technology, introduces the PIC64-HPSC 64-bit multi-core SoC that combines radiation-hardening, fault tolerance, AI readiness, high-speed networking (including a 240 Gb/s TSN Ethernet switch) and cryptographic features. NASA expects the processor to deliver over a hundredfold improvement in performance per watt versus existing space-qualified computers, enabling greater onboard autonomy, faster data processing, and new mission capabilities across Earth orbit, lunar, Martian, and deep-space missions.
