A study of 91 modern human pelvises and two Neanderthal male pelvises found that contemporary male pelvises have hip sockets rotated forward, a configuration that improves locomotion by allowing quadriceps to better absorb shock and generate propulsion. Researchers say this adaptation makes men’s gait more energy-efficient over long distances, a trait unavailable to females because of obstetric constraints.
