Your files stay put: Perplexity’s hybrid AI keeps confidential data off the cloud

Perplexity’s hybrid compute lets one AI agent divide work between cloud frontier models and locally-run open-weight models on Apple-silicon Macs. A on-device “Privacy Gate” classifier routes any subtask containing personally identifiable information to the Mac, preventing sensitive tokens from reaching the cloud. Cloud credits are charged only for orchestration, not for locally generated tokens. Demonstrations include a lawyer editing privileged briefs and a private-equity associate updating confidential financial models without any confidential data leaving the Mac.
